Meet the Mob Bosses
Maj Mob was created by two friends who love the game, love teaching it, and love bringing people together around the table. Whether you are brand new or just need things explained in a simpler way, we are here to make learning Mah Jongg feel fun, social, and doable.
Janie & Caren, Founders of Maj Mob
Janie
About Janie
I may be newer to Mah Jongg, but that is exactly why I understand how overwhelming it can feel when you are first learning. I have been playing for about a year, and it took me three different attempts at lessons before I finally stuck with it. Once I did, I was hooked.
With a degree in Education and more than 15 years of experience teaching, I know how to break things down into simple, easy-to-follow steps. My goal is to make learning Mah Jongg feel less intimidating, more understandable, and a lot more fun.
Caren
About Caren
I’ve been playing Mah Jongg for over 50 years, inspired by my mother, who played for nearly 70 years and brought a deep passion for the game to our family. While she was a very serious player, I simply fell in love with the joy of playing.
Now, I enjoy sharing that love with others—helping new players learn the game in a fun, welcoming, and relaxed environment.
Why We Teach Together
Together, we bring the perfect combination of experience and fresh perspective. We make Mah Jongg approachable, social, and fun — whether you are brand new, coming back after years away, or just looking for a more relaxed way to learn.
Maj Mob Class Descriptions & Playing Opportunities
We offer structured beginner classes, guided play, and open play opportunities tailored to guide you from learning the basics to playing full games with confidence. All materials are provided.
Maj 101
New to Mahj? This class is the perfect place to start.
If you’ve ever looked at the National Mah Jongg League card and felt completely overwhelmed, you are not alone. We teach Mahj in a simple, friendly, non-intimidating way that makes the game much easier to understand.
In Maj 101, you’ll start with the basics: learning the tiles, the rules, the Charleston, and how the game flows. By the end of class, you’ll be comfortable playing a modified version of Mahj and have a solid foundation to keep learning.
Participants receive a handy take-home reference guide containing everything taught in class to use going forward! No experience needed.
Maj 102
Ready for the next step?
Maj 102 builds on what you learned in Maj 101 and helps you move closer to playing the full game with confidence.
In this class, we reinforce the basics, teach how to build the walls, master the deal, navigate the National Mah Jongg League card, understand key etiquette, and practice decision-making during play.
By the end of Maj 102, you’ll be able to play on the National Mah Jongg League card — though you’ll still need practice to perfect your game!
Includes a comprehensive take-home guide so you have everything you need to keep practicing and playing going forward!
Guided Play
Looking for practice with extra instructor support?
Guided Play is designed for players who know the basics (or have taken Maj 101 & 102) and want hands-on experience playing real games with instructor guidance available throughout the session.
Play full games at a relaxed pace while receiving active assistance with hand selection, tile strategy, and card navigation. Offers more hands-on help than Open Play to build your skills and table confidence.
Tiles and racks provided — please bring your National Mah Jongg League card!
Open Play
Ready to play games at your own pace?
Open Play is designed for players looking for a relaxed, independent setting to play full games with friends or meet new Mahj players.
This is independent play in larger group settings. We will of course be on hand in the room to answer quick questions or clarify rules as needed, but table attention is minimal so your group can enjoy continuous play.
Tiles and racks provided — please bring your National Mah Jongg League card!
